Today I went on a hike, particularly choosing a deserted area to avoid people. Regardless of the pandemic going on, it’s Saturday of a holiday weekend so I’m not going to a popular trailhead. On the way up to the peak on my 6.5 mile route, I picked off 11 ticks from my pants (good thing I wasn’t in shorts!). So on the way back down I took a shortcut straight down the peak shown above. This cut two whole miles (if not a little bit more) from the journey back. And it was much less overgrown heading down that ridge into the valley. Plus I found that cool rusted out truck out there.
Wonderful day to get out there! Supposed to get real hot the next few days so today was the day to do it. I’ve gotta think about removing my ski rack finally. I don’t think there is any hope that mammoth opens for some July skiing. While they still have snow, it’s just unlikely they go through the hassle to open. And for sure every person in LA is gonna want to get up. And no way in hell am I staying in the hostel until next year. But eh one can dream which is the only reason I haven’t pulled it off and swapped it out for the surf board pads.
Happy Memorial day weekend everybody! Time to go eat my crock pot ribs that have been cooking all day.

Thanks for the tick PSA. I always forget how thick they are this time of year— the dog picks them up like she’s magnetic.

Looks like the van is a cabover early 60s Ford Falcon van. Pretty neat looking but terribly unsafe in a collision.

I’m right on that edge between thinking you a smug little #%$#@ and agreeing that looks pretty good. Two posts of this caliber in one day might upset that balance.
Mostly I lament decision to be so locked in urban sprawl. In less constricted years it sure would save a lot of time driving sitting in bumper to bumper traffic when I could be already out riding with a hundred of my closest friends or hiking in a private nature preserve.

Yeah the 5 minute drive to this trail head sure is nice. It would take even less time if it weren't a two way one lane road. Especially with the drivers around here, it's near impossible to expect oncoming traffic to actually stay on their side of the narrow road. It's PARTICULARLY the damn locals, they are the WORST. I can tell they live around here because it's not the super cars out for a Sunday drive. It's the big pickups and late model Toyota camrys of people who live around here. It's perplexing to see people have to careen out of the way towards the ditch when they see you. Rather than just sit there all the time so that oncoming traffic isn't so unsettling. But that's why it's better when I just bike from the house. Just gotta push through that 500 foot climb in the first mile and then it's a nice downhill jam. Getting back home is rough though if I don't drive!

Never regretted living right next to a trailhead. I might change my tune about living above everything else out there. Descending right out of the gate on cold or wet days can be a bit rough only dealing with 350' on most sides at the start of a ride. Parking at the bottom or ending every ride with a significant climb would get old.
You seem to have landed in one of the saner parts of CA in a job and location you like. These deck and mixed bike-hike posts are really making me rethink why I never lived by the ocean and mountains.

I'm certainly far from everything but work. It's by chance that I have a 15 minute commute from here. One of my roommates is 2 hours from work in long Beach. But he only was doing one day per week in the office before the virus and full time telework now. And the other people in the house are 20-30 minutes from closeby jobs in Malibu or just work from home to begin with. I imagine most people who live out here don't have a traditional office job. So it's certainly a unique place to be! I don't miss suburban living one bit but I accept that that is probably my future some day if I ever want to own something.
